Cut Your Own Hair
Posted by: momo on Mon, Mar 13th, 2006

First, make sure the hair is dry! This is important. Real curls (not the kind straight-haired people get with a perm) relax a bit when wet. But they don't do it evenly. So, if you cut natural black hair with it wet. And you don't want that. You want a nice, even cut like the people on the news, so it looks like you spent $50 just for the cut! Also need the hair to be clean and snarl-free. Clean hair cuts better and more evenly. And snarls in the hair will definitely cause an uneven end result! So, wash the hair the day before you intend to cut it. Then, right before you're going to start cutting, comb it.

First, grab a pair of straightedge cuticle or mustache scissors. Style bangs as usual and clip back the rest of your hair. Start at the center of your bangs and work your way to the outside.

Using your fingers, gently hold a small section of dry hair - only about 10 to 12 hairs at a time - straight down against your forehead. (Don't pull too tight - you'll stretch the hair and end up cutting a lot more)

Trim and cut below your fingers to keep from cutting it shorter than you'd like.

When you are done trimming each section, comb it back into the rest of your bangs to check length (and that they are even) before moving on. When you reach the end, return to the center and trim in the opposite direction until you are done.

the comment about cutting curly hair dry is a bad idea is crazy i have curly hair and if my hair person cuts it wet it does not turn out how i want it but is it is done dry it turns out perfect because it is hard to tell which way my hair will go.

I'm 15 and a dude and i cut my own hair and i've been doing it since i was like 12 i get non stop compliments and i have curly hair which i straighten (which may sound "gay" but if you got as many compliments as i do, you would too.) so i cut all my friends hair now too girls and guys and from experience trust me when this person says do it while its dry listen it turns out so much better because you know exactly how it will turn out after when it is dry with wet hair you dont know what its going to look like, curly or straight hair. then after wash it if it bothers you so much.

good job explaining.

I first cut my own hair when I was 9, and when my mom saw it, she was horrified! Years passed, and I still cut my hair whenever I feel like it. This way, I can experiment and try out new styles without feeling guilty for paying for a cut that I may or may not like. It's only hard the first time and all you need is a pair of working scissors :)

I'm sorry, but if you cut "real curls" when they are dry, you are in for a bad ride. It's like trying to make an afro lay flat. The only way to cut curly hair is when it's wet, this way it can be made "straight" with gentle resistance.

Cutting your own hair is very doable. I have cut my own hair for many years and know a lot of other people who do their own hair too. It just takes a lot of practice.
