A Quick Layered Haircut
Posted by: biggers on May 22, 2006

It takes time, money, and talent to have your hair cut. To save any of these a little, just using an easy technique can give you a quick-layered haircut. This technique can be used on both long and short hair. By short we are speaking about shoulder length or shorter. Long hair would be considered anything longer than that.

Proper tools are probably the most important part of this haircut. The following is the Preparations:

  1. A pair of sharp scissors is a must. Most trouble with DIY haircuts comes from using scissors that are dull. It is impossible to make straight, clean cuts with dull scissors. Most haircutting scissors found in grocery or drug stores usually don’t retain their sharpness as long as an expensive professional pair but they work for a while.
  2. A fine toothcomb is another tool that will make this cut go fast and easy. Any type of comb is fine as long as you can comb the hair our evenly. Hair must be combed out evenly and a fine toothcomb works well.
  3. Clean hair is also a must for this cut to work. Hair can be wet or dry although most people prefer wet cutting. Make sure that hair is shampooed and snarls are combed out. The hair must be free from residue such as hair spray and gel. Make sure that you cut your hair in an area away from food and where the hair can drop freely onto the floor.
  4. Don’t bother with a plastic covering for your clothes or a towel around your shoulders if you are trying this cut on yourself. It will just get in the way and make it difficult for you to cut. The cut can be done in front of a mirror to make sure all of the hair is tangle free and smoothed out, but the actual cutting will be done by looking at the hair.

Now you are ready to begin the cut. The procedure of this cut is for DIY. It can be adapted to cut someone else’s.

  1. Stand up, feet one foot to one and a half feet apart.
  2. Bend over, flipping hair towards the floor.
  3. Comb hair out straight and smooth.
  4. Make a cut straight across your hair.
  5. Depending on the thickness of the hair, you may need to make more than one cut.
  6. Just cut horizontally as straight as possible.
  7. The length from the top of your head to the scissors is how long the top layer of hair will be.
  8. All hair beneath the top of your head will be longer.
  9. If your cut is three inches from the top of your head, your top layer will be three inches and neckline layer will be approximately nine inches.
  10. All the other hair will be layered to lengths in between three and nine inches.

Be careful not to lock your knees. Locking your knees can lead to light-headedness. You may already feel some light-headedness by bending over. If you need to stop, do so, then repeat the process beginning where you left off, cutting as horizontally straight as you can.

It’s easy and it works. Have fun with your new-layered haircutting technique.

Hi guys. When I bend over to cut the top of my hair,do I comb the top straight out in front of me? Or comb it down to the floor. I tried the later, it looked horrible. Now I want to try something else. Any more ideas?

I have very long hair and was willing to experiment: if I screwed it up I still had enough hair to work with at the salon. My friend cuts her own hair this way, so I tried it out and it works great. At the hair dresser, she pulls my hair straight up to do this cut, so upside down is the same technique, except free :)

I 'm having a problem cutting the top of my hair. Do I comb it back over the top of my head and cut it off that way, to get height on top?
I tried combing all of it straight up together, and it looked terrible. Then I brought all of it forward and cut it straight off. Then it was too flat. But I need some volume or height what ever you call it. I'm 65 and look more like 50 they say. So I need that layered look yet.
Even tried cutting into it on the ends. Nothing works.

Please help while I still have some hair left.
I Can cut all the rest. It's just the top I'm having a major problem with.
Getting so peeved ready to go bald.

Thanks so so much!
